>(July 2 1999)Microsoft has unveiled BackOffice Small Business Server 4.5, the latest version of its server suite for small and medium enterprises. The new release offers a comprehensive set of tools for controlling setup, network management and Net connectivity. It cost US$1,499 for the server and five-client workstation licence.

>(July 3 1999)FACT System Malaysia which was incorporated in early 1993 as a whollyowned company of Singapore-based FACT Software International Pte Ltd, recently appointed Faridah Rohani Rais as its general manager to lead its company in the Malaysia market.
Faridah, who joined the company in 1996, holds an Associated of Certified Accountants (ACCA) diploma in human resource and a diploma in public relations.
She has more than 15 years hands-on experience in corporate finance, industrial relations, legal, public relations and marketing. In her position, she reports to the chief excutive officer and president of FACT Software International. Prior to this Faridah had served with multinatinals Smithkline Beecham, Colgate-Palmolive Malaysia and Shandwick Public Relations.

At the same time, Caroline Teh Suan Ching and Karen Low Sook Teng who joined the company in 1998 were recently promoted to customer care excutives. Both Teh and Low will oversee the developement and building of relationships with customers.

Their main responsibility is to build customer loyalty.They will lead a team of customer care officers and will manage customers and potential prospects. They will also conduct presentations and seminars specific to existing FACT users as well as stratigic customer-oriented activities to meets customers' needs.

BUSINESS software company Computer Associates International Inc (CA)'s chief executive on Monday said the acquisition of rival Platinum Technologies would bolster its electronic commerce (e-commerce) business, as the company set its sights on long-time rival IBM. CA will use Platinum's data mining and storage products, adding its own data visualisation and net working software, so that a department store chain, for example, could create a three-dimentional virtual store for customers to navigate.

Direct seller and personal computer maker Gateway Inc said on Tuesday it expected to maintain profit margins and compete in a market where personal computers (PC) cost less than US$1,000 (RM3,800). Despite the cut of price, Gateway is able to maintain gross profit margins on those computers because customers often buy add-ons like extended warranties and software.
